After recent discussions with some members of the union, concerns have been raised about the standard of the food available at the hubs provided by Sodexo. I must admit that I feel the standard of food has gone considerably downhill in recent months. Now, as I am sure we can all understand, Sodexo are a business and are there to make a profit. But when they are receiving £4.95 per meal (subsidised by the company to the tune of £2.95) I feel the quality offered should be improved.
Healthy Options
Being on shift for 10 plus hours a night driving a truck is not the healthiest of jobs and with DPD and Sodexo promoting healthier eating, I think it would be in their interests to provide a better menu than “something with chips”. Members have also expressed that previously, for example, poached egg on toast or smaller meals were on offer from the catering staff. Sometimes a large meal is not always required, especially when working night shifts.
Literally “Night & Day”
A few weeks ago, I was invited to Hub 1 for a health and safety meeting during the day, I popped into the canteen, you would not have thought it was the same company providing the night shift catering. Salad boxes, Cheese on toast, vast array of sandwiches etc this is what should be offered at every canteen day and night. Offering up a side salad of iceberg lettuce with a couple of chopped tomatoes would not cut it at Smethwick on days, so why should it be okay for the night shift at Hinckley?
Your Input
Attached to this doc is a link to a document in which I would like you to write your suggestions as to what you would like to see on the menu, and we can put it forward to the manager of Sodexo to try implement some of them. Please keep suggestions brief, this is not a platform to complain about staff etc it is about how to provide a better menu for the customers who are buying the food. Also please bear in mind that Sodexo have a profit to make and wages to pay, so I would keep sirloin steak off the list. Stuff like Jacket potatoes & fillings etc. If you struggle to add it to the link below, then either use the message button on the webpage which sends your suggestion straight to the branch secretary or on the sheet on the noticeboards at the hubs.

Dear Colleagues, You will be aware that we were meeting the company today (21st October) to hold a further meeting to discuss the ongoing wage negotiations. The company made an Improved offer, which they will now confirm in writing, once we receive this we will as we are obliged to we will put this offer to a ballot. This offer will be accompanied by a unanimous recommendation to reject as we do not believe the improved offer meets our members aspirations. Once we have the offer we will communicate further regarding the offer and the balloting process.
Thank you for your support,
Matt Draper

Dear Member
Your National Negotiating Committee (NNC) met on 2nd October 2024 to discuss the outcome of the recent pay award ballot which was unanimously rejected by the members. The NNC discussed ways of pulling together an improved claim which we believe would satisfy the membership.
The NNC have requested a substantial increase on base rates for all categories of workers and this was sent to the company for their response.
The company have responded and wish to discus with your NNC the rationale behind the pay claim.
We will meet with the company at the earliest opportunity, however we are conducting the necessary legal checks to allow us to ballot you for industrial action if we have to, these preparations are ongoing with a view to taking strike action over Christmas peak if we fail to get a satisfactory improved offer. Please be assured that whilst you may not visibly see this it is happening.
To explain the reason for looking a pay rates per role is that the significant increase in the national minimum wage to £11.44 closed the gap between unskilled and skilled roles pay rates.
Your NNC looked to keep the pay differentials as even as possible so avoiding a straight forward % increase.
Basically keeping the wage rates inline with the differing groups of workers.
We are also aware that if the new minimum wage set for April 2025 is again substantial as previously the gaps again will grow closer.
Hence the reason we have asked for a large increase for pay rates this time around.
Until we have a formal proposal from the employer we will be in a position to ballot our members once again
We are mindful however that any delays in pay talks in not down to your trade union, and we are keen to sit around the national table with DPD to find a satisfactory pay award which can be accepted by our members, we are committed to make sure that happens.
Also to note that we are nearing Peak and Christmas , please do not be blindsided in respect of the company putting out any pay proposal which includes retrospective back pay.
This can lead members into thinking back pay is good for their Christmas spend, and its very much dangling a carrot, hoping that whatever is proposed would be acceptable.
Your NNC wish to get a recommended deal, and this will be fed back to you as soon as able.
Thank you for your continued support and if you know of any colleague who is not in the trade union then join now. Also please ensure your details are up to date with the union.
This is a crucial time for solidarity and strength in numbers, we have seen growth in the trade union so lets keep building armour around us all.
Regards
Your NNC
